A couple of weeks back I went to the Clayfolk Pottery show & sale at the Medford Armory. With free admission, dozens upon dozens of local artists, inexpensive and fabulous work to purchase, along with an agenda filled with artists teaching you their tricks while doing so, you cannot go wrong. This year was my 4th year in a row attending Clayfolk. It is so much fun to speak with the artists about where they get their inspirations, how they do it, and where to find them next. This is a world I wish I would have discovered much sooner. Year after year the same artists and consumers come back, but every year there is always more. This time around, I embraced a new favorite couple from Grants Pass. I adore their pottery, with blazing blues and greens of deep, rich tones. I found myself admiring their work and perusing other areas of the show, yet continually coming back to the same spot. I started with a small dish, which went to four small dishes, then an appetizer plate was added (shaped like a fish I might add), then a set of bowls and salad plates, and I finally added an olive boat. Jerry and Shirley Huft of Pig Pen Pots ended up with an $80 sale from me. But let me tell you…it is by far the best purchase I have made so far for both beauty and practicality. With under $100 I managed to buy a whole set for two. In fact, I loved their work so much I contacted them when I got to work Monday morning to see if they would be interested in having a spot for their work in the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center’s display case. Fortunately for both of us, they did. You can now view their work at 101. S. Bartlett St in Medford until the end of January.

Little did I know, the other artist I secured from Clayfolk for the second section of the display case was their best friend. Nina Fernstrom-Duong of Happy Raku Fish has an excellent collection of hanging fish (from string) with all different facial expressions. This artist is from Junction City, OR. I have also noticed her work year after year at Clayfolk. When Jerry and Shirley saw who the other artist was going to be in which they shared the case, they were simply tickled with pleasure. To be honest, I was more than delighted when I discovered this. The last thing I wanted to do was reach out to artists in order to help their sales and networking, and step on toes along the way. You can view both on www.clayfolk.org and browse the others while you are there. Lastly, I have to mention Cheryl Weese of Red Bird Pottery, located on the South Umpqua River. Her focus is in cartoon like, wild women faces. A must see!

Three weeks ago I was able to attend what us Southern Oregon marketers like to call a “research trip” on the beautifulRogue Riverin Merlin. I was joined by a lovely group of ladies by the names of Linea Gagliano/Travel Oregon, Jamie Porter/ TravelOregon, Vicky Hastings/Maxwell PR, Eileen Garvin/Mediamerica, Kerrie Walters/Grants Pass Tourism, Anne Jenkins/Medford VCB, Sue Price/Southern Oregon Marketing, Jean Kurtz/Roseburg VCB, and Carolyn Hill/Southern Oregon Visitors Association. I would be cruel to leave out Brad Niva/Rogue Wilderness, but he doesn’t belong on the “one of the ladies” roster.

The research trip is a way to experience our tourism products first-hand, so we can do our marketing stuff—blogs like this, Facebook, and all the rest. We started at Galice Resort overlooking the Rogue River on Galice Road. This is right outside ofGrantsPass. If this is an area you have never explored, I will urge you to do so as soon as you can. Just the drive out to the destination, paired with my favorite CD, was the best part of my week. Cruising along the back roads, with sunshine peeking through the trees, I knew I was in for a treat from the get-go. Being fromSouthern Oregonand already having a great bond with the river, I knew what it had to offer. But, the simple fact that I would be promoting my region to the “mother ships” of theOregontourism industry, I wanted to try and take every moment in for what it had to offer. I had been down that road (literally) hundreds of times to and from rafting and/or hiking, but I honestly feel that this overnight trip gave me a better appreciation for the area I live in.

Back to the beginning…we were greeted by the Galice Resort owners, Debbie and her mother Mary Lou. We sat on the deck and tasted a variety of local wine while talking about what the next couple of days had to offer and our goal of the marketing meeting as a whole. Anne from the Medford Chamber gave us a tiny sneak peak into the new marketing approach they are going to take on (which I am very curious about), Brad gave us the history of the Rogue River, and the Galice ladies gave us the history and focus of their resort. They shared with us how they try and do their best to keep it very family oriented. I have pulled off the river on a Friday or Saturday night and have seen them out on the dance floor (in between serving customers), while rocking out to the live music. People wait almost an hour to have their home-style cookin’ because it is no nuisance, yet a pleasure to sit with strangers at those picnic tables and enjoy the local vibe. Equally informative: Brad gave me (a local kid, growing up in Gold Hill on the Rogue), some things to take home that I did not already know. For example, coming from Boundary Spring in Crater Lake National Park (which I have hiked before), the Rogue River is famous for its salmon runs, whitewater rafting, and rugged scenery, and it was one of the original eight rivers named in the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Facts such as these have brought a handful of celebrities to our area. Take Zane Grey for example. He loved it so much he built a cabin near a trail along the Rogue. I’ve been there before, but I am going to challenge you to do some web sleuthing! (Hint: look at Travel Southern Oregon’s Facebook page…).

After wrapping it up there, we went over the Morrison’s Rogue River Lodge. Happily bunking up with my local gals and colleagues, we unpacked our bags and poured ourselves a lemon martini to get our creative (and relaxing) juices flowing. Instead of staying in the cabins (which are ideally suited for a romantic getaway, I might add), we stayed upstairs in the lodge on Taylor Creek. This little creek offers a small trail to walk along and enjoy your company, or to enjoy the peace and quiet of no company at all. Whatever your choice, it will be a good one as long as you are there.

Heading over to the main lodge and restaurant, I was screaming inside with excitement. For some odd reason, I had never eaten at their restaurant until this day. In fact, the week before, my Dad was there and came home raving about the five-course meals and how everything was so delicious. Well, any of you who know me know that I am the least fussy eater you will ever meet but I am a true “foodie” at heart. I, in no way shape or form, let a meal guilt me into not eating or into how much time I will need to spend at a gym to make up for it. The truth of the matter is, when you are in for a treat why not go for the whole sha-bang? Wine, local brews, sweet bread, creamy soup, locally caught salmon, roasted potatoes, green salad, you name it! What did I have to top it off? Coffee paired with a chocolate tort of course. Hungry yet?

After dinner all of us gathered by the fire with the Lodge manager, Lowell Pratt. Sharing stories about our favorite things to do in Southern Oregon, while the some of the others quickly took notes. I thought about taking notes, too, but then realized: I would have no problem taking myself back to this day, and the fireside moment on the Rogue. I never do. I have to admit that this kind of lifestyle could truly spoil a persons work-ethic, and this is not the typical working day in the tourism industry so don’t go off quitting your job or anything. Do know that it is not hard to work in a job that you enjoy what you do, the people that you work with, and what you are selling. What I am “selling” per se is the local attraction that so many people yearn to have in their life and that is why they all come to enjoy it. The flowing river, lakes galore, the rolling hills, large mountains, every season in the year, more green than most could imagine, a long list of outdoor adventures to enjoy it all, and better yet the fact that it is in my back yard.

Last year I came back from 4 months of traveling alone to 14 different countries in Europe and Africa, and I can honestly say that although a lot of it was breathtaking, none of it could ever measure up to the way thatSouthern Oregonmakes me feel. There is just something about it you have to explore and understand yourself…so when the term “cell out” is used, it means to get out of range, turn off all electronic devices and take it all in.

See pictures on our Travel Southern Oregon facebook of the trip!

Have you ever zipped? If not, I suggest to get on it! Recently opened and certified Rogue Valley Zipline Adventure is the place to do it. Last week I had the opportunity with the Rogue Valley tourism girls to test out this new local adventure. As I am sure you are aware of, up until this point we did not have anything like it. The closest zip lining company is in Takilma, which is hours away. Just in the backyard of Gold Hill/Central Point, you can zip over 2700 ft!!!

Accompanying me was Kerrie and Dana of Grants Pass Tourism, as well as Dana’s bold son (Zach). We also had Sue of Southern Oregon Marketing and the two gals of Southern Oregon Visitors Association, Carolyn and I. When we arrived at the pick-up spot just right off the freeway, the owner, Lindsey, and her “best and over-worked guide”, Steve picked us up. During the short ride up to the property, we were able to chat with the other three people who were zipping that day. One of them was a “repeat offender” as I like to say, Ivete, an avid adventure seeker, and her two (handsome) sons from the east coast. Ryan was the tall, shy, mama’s boy and Chris was the short, comedian/lady killer. After just a few minutes of arrival to the “orientation station” my boss Carolyn and the others thought it might be a good idea for Ryan and I to pose as a couple for a classic media shot. Although slightly embarrassed, I would be lying if I said I minded.

Our two guides were more than helpful, engaging, and more importantly safe! I was really impressed with their accommodations they were able to provide us with considering our circumstance. They might not be ADA approved (yet), but they are definitely friendly. They make you feel so comfortable during and after your first 100ft zip, that you would be crazy to turn down the other 4. Yes, there are 5 ziplines during your ride. You get “harnessed up” at the bottom of the hill with a helmet and cool personalized RVZA water bottle that straps right to you. Lindsey even went out of her way to grab extra hair ties so I could strap my camera to me while zipping and take pictures. Little things like this all day long—you can really tell they want you to have the best time possible.

As you begin the 3-4 hour guided tour, you are given important instructions to work you through any details you could possibly worry about, then off to the first zip. This is more like a trial zip to give you a feel of it all, and to make sure you can “back out” if needed. Out of about 550 users since around mid July when they opened, we were told that only one person changed their mind after the first run. After that you are off to a few more small hikes in between your zips as you climb higher and higher into the hills of Kane Creek. The second zip is 300ft, the third is 500ft, the fourth is 800ft, and lastly you get to experience over 1300ft of zip on the fifth zip. I have to tell you, it seems like you are looking at ants on the other side of the mountain while looking at your zip buddies across the way where you will end up after that final zip. The view is absolutely breathtaking. If you love the Rogue Valley as much as I do, you could attest that this is one of the best places for the full view. Not only do you get both Table Rocks, you also get the rim of Crater Lake, Mount McLoughlin, and Brown Mountain. Soaring over the trees in the natural wilderness, there are not a lot of things that can feel as good as this.

Lastly, when you think all the fun is over with and it is time to go home (trust me, you will be sad when this time comes), they stop the shuttle van in order for you to view the little historic gold mine for your last photo op. Dare yourself to go, you will not regret it!

Will be featured on The Learning Channel and is in contention for a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant

MEDFORD, Ore., August 11, 2011– Kid Time! Discovery Experience, Medford’s a hand’s on children’s discovery and family learning center will be featured Monday August 15th on The Learning Channels special series “Surprise Homecoming” while also being considered for a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh grant.

Now operating in its new location at 106 N Central Avenue in downtown Medford, Kid Time! has seen tremendous growth, with 50-100% increases in attendance each month. The local enthusiasm caught the attention of The Learning Channel in May, as they sought a family-friendly location to film an episode of the series “Surprise Homecoming” that documents that surprise return of military servicemen and servicewomen and the effects of the separation on their families.

The “surprise” took place during a preview of an upcoming early education programs to be offered in collaboration with the Family Nurturing Center and Kid Time!. “It was an honor to take part in such a heartfelt moment for these parents and their baby girl,” says Kid Time! Executive Director Sunny Spicer.

In an effort to reach families and increase the availability of vital information, Kid Time! is seeking a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh grant. Kid Time! was selected among thousands of applicants and is now in the midst of a public vote. Those projects receiving the top 10 highest votes will be funded.

Kid Time! connects imaginative play with a child’s ability to succeed in life. Filled with interactive, brain-developing activities designed to facilitate parent/child interaction, Kid Time! provides the tools for children to reach their full potential. With 41% of Jackson County children not completing high school, it is imperative that children are ready for school and have the capacity to learn so that they can complete their education and lead successful lives.

“When our kids don’t finish school and don’t have the ability to succeed in the work force, we pay a huge price” says Andy Batzer, Kid Time! Board Member “For every dollar we invest in quality early childhood programs, we as a society see a return of $13.00. The bulk of that $13.00 is in criminal justice savings. That doesn’t include the $325,000,000 in lost life-time earnings from the estimated 1000 children that don’t graduate every year in Jackson County alone.”

By focusing efforts on our youngest population, during a time that yields the highest results, Kid Time! helps reduce the effects of poverty and electronic distractions by improving success in school and stronger family relationships that ultimately reduce the likelihood of addiction, criminal activity, dependence on welfare programs and more.

“This is an exciting opportunity for not only for our organization, but for the children of this community” says Sunny Spicer, Kid Time! Executive Director. Construction on the first phase of the
project is complete, and fundraising for the second phase of this expansion is underway. The new venue offers 18,000 square feet of exhibit space filled with hands-on interactive exhibits, focusing on the Past, Present and Future of the Rogue Valley.

Many of the exhibits will represent local business and industry, including a Kids Credit Union sponsored by Rogue Federal Credit Union. “Rogue Federal is committed to providing a better future for the youth in our community” says Jeanne Pickens, Vice President of Marketing, “ We have chosen to partner with Kid Time because they provide the hands on learning experiences that are necessary to a child’s proper development.”

Early education programs that focus on optimal brain development and engage parents with their children while building a dedication to the life-long learning process are essential to a vital and healthy society. Since 2005, Kid Time! has been working collaboratively with social service organizations, service clubs, educators and local businesses to provide quality early education programs to nearly 250,000 visitors. Attendance in the new, more visible location in downtown Medford is expected to grow to over 100,000 visits annually.

The entire relocation and expansion project is expected to cost $825,000. Oregon Community Foundation generously supported the endeavor with a 2 year $230,000 grant to start the process. “Obtaining this grant from Pepsi would provide an enormous boost to our fundraising efforts” says Spicer “and help us reach out to many, many families.”

The public at large can vote for the project by texting the number 108096 to 73774, or visiting www.refresheverything.com, and collecting caps from Pepsi products with special voting codes that increase your votes. Additional information is available at www.kid-time.org or by following Kid Time! on Facebook.

Cycle Oregon announced its Week and Weekend ride routes for 2011 – The 24th version of the Week Ride, with a “Going Coastal” theme, features six first-time host towns and nearly all first-time routes, and will include ride segments along the Oregon coast. Other than two routes that ended at the coast, Cycle Oregon has not included a coastal segment since 1994, and has only included rides along the coast three times in its history.

The Week Ride will start and end in Sutherlin, which is located in the beautiful Land of Umpqua in Southern Oregon. Along the way riders will experience a wide variety of Oregon’s terrain, from rolling pastures to the Coast Range, rocky ocean headlands and wine country. Besides Sutherlin, the route includes overnight stays in Cottage Grove, Reedsport, Bandon, Powers and Riddle.

Cycle Oregon was founded in 1987 to boost bicycle tourism and provide financial support for Oregon’s small rural communities. Each year the Cycle Oregon Fund supplies grants to support bicycling in Oregon as well as the communities through which it rides. The fund, with more than $1 million in assets, typically donates more than $100,000 annually to projects around the state.

The south coast is the place for travelers who want to get away from the same old thing – traffic, strip malls, franchise hotels and restaurants. Travelers who’d like to bring home tales of something off-beat, who enjoy exploring the special but quirky.

Oregon’s spectacular south coast is a world all its own, very different from its northern counterpart. It is remote, underdeveloped, without the crowds. A series of authentic small towns scattered along what could reasonably be considered the U.S.’s last accessible, affordable coastline. This is where the ocean and the forests meet the crashing seas. Where rivers pour into the Pacific and people enjoy long, empty beaches perfect for agates and driftwood.

Port Orford is in the middle of it, perfectly situated as base camp to explore the best of the south coast…from redwoods to the south, the sand dunes up near Florence, and everything inbetween.

Jetboats on the Rogue, from Gold Beach going upriver, it's a great adventure

Hiking. Art. Antiques. Biking. Golf. Birding. Fishing. History. Museums. Shopping. Boating. Surfing. Horseback riding. Wine. Wind surfing. Parks, reserves, floral estates and estuaries. All framed with spectacular ocean vistas on one side and the forests and mountains on the other.

And it bears repeating…all without the crowds.

Visitors will find some unexpected options in Port Orford, 60 miles from the California border and an authentic port town of only 1,200 people.

The Port of Port Orford is probably the heart of the town, home to its commercial fishing fleet that – unusually – does not rest in the water. The Port is one of only two “dolly docks” in the U.S. and six in the world, where boats are lifted in and out of the water by huge cranes and sit on custom-made trailers when not in use.

The area is also known for its active art community, with eight galleries owned and operated by working artists, and some beautifully restored and maintained historic sites, such as Hughes House – an authentic Victorian Mansion – and the old Coast Guard Lifeboat station where brave and hardy men had to jerry-can gas down a thousand steps to Nellie’s Cove where they would start their sea rescue missions during Port Orford’s famous winter storms.

If visitors like to indulge themselves with luxurious accommodations in a naturally beautiful environment, there’s WildSpring Guest Habitat. On five acres in a quiet, residential forest overlooking the ocean, it offers only five cabin suites built like small homes, filled with art and antiques, a Guest Hall, lounging areas, sculpture garden, walking labyrinth and open-air slate spa where guests can whale-watch by day and enjoy the Milky Way at night. Known for its peaceful seclusion, attention to detail and eco-friendly operations, it is a Select Registry Inn and has enjoyed some national attention of note, including USA Today and the NY Times.

Gorgeous day on Oregon's South Coast, near Bandon

The most recent addition to the local scene sits on the northern end of Battle Rock Park and offers arguably the most beautiful views of the Pacific ocean in the U.S.: across sea stacks, a beach with sand the color of a mocha late, down to Humbug Mountain, the tallest mountain in Oregon to rise directly from the ocean.

Here, Redfish is that rare restaurant serving food that actually lives up to the view, and looks like it came from Top Chef. The executive chef Patrick Zulick trained at celebrity chef Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bistro in Las Vegas, and specializes in Pacific Northwest adaptations of traditional French recipes using fresh local fish, beef, chicken, lamb and produce. It has the Redfish LOFT upstairs, a one-room luxury guest suite overlooking the bay.

Also part of this new mixed-use development is Hawthorne Gallery, with museum-quality art in a space that begs comparison to metro world-class galleries. It shows the unique works of 14 internationally collected artists from across the country, including eight of the very gifted Hawthorne family, who also owns the famous Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur, California.

Port Orford, beautiful and surprising, is a great place to visit if people want to experience the best of Oregon’s beautiful coast without having to fight their way through crowded streets to reach it.

Chemult, Ore. –The infectious enthusiasm and energy of sled dogs will be seen and heard by young and old spectators alike on January 15 and 16. This year’s Annual Chemult Sled Dog Races is particularly special as it marks 50 years of sled dog racing in Oregon.
“This free event is a great opportunity for everyone to experience the excitement of competitive sled dog racing and Skijoring, which are popular winter sports,” said Erin Sutton, a race organizer for the event. “Mushers from as far away as Arizona, Michigan and British Columbia have competed in this annual event.”
Races will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day and conclude sometime around mid-afternoon at the Walt Haring Sno-Park. The schedule consists of six sled dog races and two Skijoring races (cross-country skier pulled by 1-2 dogs). Walt Haring Sno-Park is
located one-quarter mile north of Chemult, Ore., on Highway 97. Chemult is approximately one and a half hours from Bend, Ore., and Klamath Falls, Ore.
During the sled dog events, Sno-Park permits are required. However, some permits will be available at the Walt Haring Sno-Park warming shelter. Oregon, Washington and California Sno-Park permits are all acceptable. Plan ahead and obtain your permit in advance. Due to limited space at the Sno-Park, spectators are asked to use the Walt Haring Sno-Park’s north parking lot. People attending the races are asked to leave all domestic pets at home. Anyone who wishes to watch the races from a vantage point along the trail is encouraged to bring
snowshoes or cross-country skis. Toilet facilities and a concession stand will be available at the Sno-Park.
Saturday, Jan 15
• In addition to the sled and Skijoring races, children ages 5-12, are welcome to participate in a just-for-fun peewee race (a short trip on a sled pulled by a single dog) or a snowman building contest (11 a.m.-1 p.m.).
• Silent auction items will be available for bid during the day at the warming shelter and at Loree’s Chalet on Saturday evening. Sweatshirts and t-shirts will also be available for purchase.
• Loree’s Chalet will serve dinner specials from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday, Jan 16
• While the races continue, silent auction items will be available during the day at the Sno-Park warming shelter and conclude when the races end that day.
• An awards ceremony will take place at the warming shelter after the last race. The Chemult Sled Dog Races, one of southern Oregon’s premier wintertime sporting events, is organized and managed by the Chemult Sled Dog Races Association. The association is supported by the Pacific Sled Dog and Skijoring Association, Chemult Mountain Trail Riders Snowmobile Club, Chemult Rural Fire Protection District, Klamath
County Search and Rescue, Fremont-Winema National Forests’ Chemult Ranger District and local volunteers. Races are conducted under a Fremont-Winema National Forests special use permit.
Since the winter of 1994, the community of Chemult has hosted this event utilizing the trail system on the Fremont-Winema National Forest and Walt Haring Sno-Park.
For more information about the races, contact Erin Sutton at (541) 408-5729 or
erinkobza@yahoo.com or Polly Riley at (541) 593-9884 or plriley@ici-web.com.

Southern Oregon’s beautiful Upper Rogue region is one of the prettiest places you’ll find in an already-gorgeous part of Oregon. Beginning this weekend, you’ll find holiday fun at the Rogue River Lodge just outside Shady Cove.

The holiday season is in full swing at the historic Rogue River Lodge with Christmas carolers, Santa Claus, and free hot cider this Saturday evening. Carolers from Eagle Point High School will sing traditional holiday favorites beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by a special appearance by Santa at 7 p.m. at the Rogue River Lodge outdoor pavilion.
“This is a great opportunity to get into the holiday spirit and involve the entire family with a nostalgic holiday tradition,” said Anne Kimball, Rogue River Lodge owner. “The Rogue River Lodge provides an idyllic location to enjoy holiday traditions and special times with friends and family.”
Children can visit Santa and tell him their Christmas wish list, and free photos can be taken by parents. Free hot cider will also be available. Children are welcome in the Riverview Room until 8:30 p.m. as well as our main dining room.
Families are encouraged to bring a canned food donation for ACCESS Food Share, which feeds the hungry locally through 22 food pantries.
As part of its holiday season, Rogue River Lodge is offering $10 gift cards to the restaurant with every $100 gift card purchase.
On Saturday, Dec. 18, Eagle Point High carolers will again sing at 6:30 p.m., and Santa will visit beginning at 7:30 p.m. Last Saturday, December 4, the Rogue River Lodge held its First Annual Tree Lighting following the Shady Cove Middle School Christmas celebration and the Shady Cove Christmas Tree Lighting. The Trolley transported people from Shady Cove to the Lodge while enjoying Christmas caroling from the Boys and Girls Club of Shady Cove as well as kids from Prospect Charter School.
“Rogue River Lodge is more than a dining destination,” said Kimball. “We provide a venue with excellent food and wine, as well as community activities such as holiday events, culinary classes, wine tastings and winemaker dinners – highlighting Northwest Cuisine and locally sourced products.”
For additional upcoming holiday events, including live performances, visit Rogue River Lodge’s website at www.therogueriverlodge.com or follow the Lodge on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RogueRiverLodge for updates.
